Whisper in Water 11 May 2003 @ 10:08 pm
at the water's edge where the tides meet the strand we sat in silence
i reached to her but though my arm was around her it was as if i was not there
a cold and hungry ache ran through me because i could not find a way to alleviate her uneasiness, neither word nor question nor touch seemed to fall in place, every entreaty brushed aside like the fine white sand upon which we sat as a fire flickered and danced in the distance and the watercraft lights skimmed across the near horizon
the chill of the night air and the ocean breeze descended upon us and we walked back the way we came
i stayed a few paces behind, my head bowed, eyes forward like the low beams on a car sweeping the pavement
stepping lively over the kelp which lay like ghosts upon the shore.
we walked in silence.
my concern deepened
